Swimming Smarts

"Buddy up!”- Always try to swim with a partner.

Get Skilled – Be prepared, learn some life saving skills such as CPR.

Know your limits – Swimming can be a lot of fun but if you are not a good swimmer or just learning how to swim don't go into water that is too deep that you can not touch the bottom.

Swim in safe areas only – It is a good idea to swim in areas that have life guards. Swimming in an open body of water ( lake, pond, or ocean) is very different than swimming in a pool. You will need more energy to swim and handle the currents and other conditions in the open water.

Be Careful about DIVING- Diving injuries can cause permanent damage to your body or even death. Dive only in areas that are marked for Diving.

Watch the sun - Always use sunscreen and reapply if you are going to be in the water for a long amount of time.

Drink plenty of fluids- It's easy to get dehydrated in the sun especially if you are active and sweating.

Getting too cool - Staying in cool water can lower your core body temperature. If you start to shiver in the water get out of the water and warm up.
